Health: Sleek, Trim & Sparkling in Time for spring
Picture of the English National Ballet School LogoTake some Advice from the Professionals
Have you ever been envious of the poise and elegance of ballet dancers? If the answer is yes, then it is worth learning the secrets of students studying at the English National Ballet School (ENBS), courtesy of their seven simple rules.

Not only will you avoid the hassle of strict diets and costly monthly gym memberships but, by making some small changes to your posture and lifestyle, you will soon see the changes in time for spring.

Running an international centre of excellence for all aspiring young dancers worldwide, ENBS Director Jane Hackett advises her students to stay looking good with a simple but effective plan.  Her seven simple rules are an adapted version of the dancer's programme created by Hackett that anyone can fit into their daily routine.

“Lots of people want to change their regime and see some improvements in the spring, but it can be hard when it’s still chilly outside.  Take some inspiration from ballet dancers who are acutely sensitive to their body’s demands and needs where nutrition and exercise are concerned,” explains Hackett, an ex-ballet dancer herself, who understands the rigours of performance and the need to keep looking good and feeling well.

ENBS takes nutrition very seriously and has its own nutritionist on hand to advise students on coping with a rigorous training programme, eating well and looking good on stage.

Hackett explains: “Our simple programme, such as adopting good posture can help to make you toned, fit and full of energy.  Posture is particularly important, dancers are used to standing straight and this helps you to instantly look slimmer and younger.  Exercise will also help combat the extra pounds so many of us gain over the Christmas period.  We suggest that you really can make small changes and see the results by springtime.”

the seven simple rules

Stretch

Tip one: Stretch
As soon as you get up; spend a couple of minutes doing some simple arm and side stretches. Take a break in the day to do 10 minutes of Pilates/stretching or repeat your arm stretch.  Come on, you can find 10 minutes in 24 hours!

hydrate

tip two: Hydrate
Counteract alcohol and dry central heating by drinking lots of water (No, not juice, tea or coffee – it isn’t the same).

oxygen

tip three: Oxygen
Follow your stretching with a couple of minutes breathing, sitting.  Become aware of your breath (perhaps on a count of five).  This will calm you down and or/ give you lots of energy.

walk

tip four: Walk
Look for opportunities to walk to the shops, to friends, to use public transport, with the kids or the dog!

diet

tip Five: Organise your diet
Most treat foods are high carbohydrates and high in fat, have a small amount of these and balance with lots of salad or vegetables

f&V
tip six: Fruit and vegetables
Make the most of lovely fruit (preferably fresh).

feel tall
tip Seven: Feel tall
Finally, even if you don’t have time for anything else, stand tall! You will feel more energetic, move more easily and gracefully and miraculously you should lose two inches from your waist and gain length in your neck & an inch on your bust!  Not to mention lovely posture, elegance and looking more toned.
