Beauty: Make-up
James_Kaliardos

L’OrÉal Paris make-up artist James kaliardos
Make-Up Artist James Kaliardos has been the creative force behind L'Oréal Paris's sensational make-up collections developing new products, colours and textures in Paris with L'Oréal's International Make-Up Team.

Kaliardos’s innate talent has seen him work with some of the most international renown names like photographer, Steven Meisel who personally encouraged Kaliardos to further develop his make-up skills. Since then, Kaliardos has gone on to work with photographers Stéphane Sednaoui, Ellen von Unwerth and this year, will offer his expertise at the Fashion Fringe showcase at London Fashion Week in September.

Now, through his relationship with L'Oréal Paris one of the world’s biggest make-up brands we all have the opportunity to experience directly why celebrities like Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Sofia Coppola (to name a few) love him and pick-up some tips to help us look glamourous too.

Questions: answers

Question: What is the trend for A/W '05?

answer: There are several strong trends coming through this season, most of them highly influenced by the 1960s, which also features heavily in fashion collections this season. To start with big, voluminous eyelashes are key and should be paired with strongly lined eyes; think Twiggy and Penelope Tree. When it comes to lip colour it can be soft, smudged on with the finger, or applied with lip liner and a brush for strong, polished colour.

Question: What can we expect to see on the counters for S/S '06? answer: Lots of new and inspirational products that women will love!

Question: If there is one item of make-up a woman should have for this season, what should it be? answer: New Volume Shocking Mascara from L’Oréal Paris (see below), it’s the best way to create this season’s over the top lashes.

Question: What make-up item should every woman have? answer: A good base should be the starting point for every woman. You need something that’s light but will cover any slight imperfections or blemishes, which even models have. I like True Match from L’Oréal Paris, it has skin-true shades and it’s totally blendable, making it the perfect base to build on.

Question: As a make-up artist, what item can you not do without and why? answer: For me, it has to be Glam Shine in Moon Crystal. The texture is incredible and the colour is extremely versatile, it takes seconds to apply but can really change a look.

Question: What advice can you give to improve the quality of a women's skin or prevent unnecessary damage due to poor make-up application or cleansing? answer: Always remove your make-up and invest in a good quality cleanser. Don’t be rough with your skin; don’t drag the skin when you use brushes or your fingers to apply make-up. The skin on your face is delicate and is constantly exposed to the sun and pollution, protect it by wearing a sunscreen daily.

Question: In your opinion what makes a woman beautiful? answer: I like strong, independent women, who have self-belief and who aren’t afraid to follow their dreams.

Question: Which celebrity do you enjoy working with or have enjoyed making-up thanks to the finished results?

answer: Natalia Vodianova is a favourite because she is not only has a pure beauty she understands the concept of make-up and how it works. I also like Milla Jovovich, Madonna, Giselle and Carolyn Murphy.

Question: What has been your most favourite work to date? answer: I joined L’Oréal Paris in 2003 and it has been an incredible experience and a unique opportunity. I have been involved with a number of campaigns and initiatives and it’s always rewarding to see your work evolve from initial concept to finished idea, whether it be on a TV advert, in a magazine or on a catwalk. Working with L’Oréal Paris has given me the freedom to work across different mediums and that’s always important when you’re constantly looking for inspiration and identifying trends.

Question: What do you hope to achieve at L'Oréal? answer: I hope to continue working with L’Oréal Paris, creating products in colours and textures that are innovative and stylish. Collaborating with a global cosmetics brand has helped my realise many of my dreams in terms of developing product ideas.

Question: What inspires you? answer: The world around me; I’m influenced by many different things like art, nature and architecture. My friends, my travels, fashion, theatre; I try to keep my eyes and ears open all the time as you never know when you’re going to find something that will be the seed of an idea.

Question:
What beauty/make-up
tip do you have for the day or evening?

answer: For day keep make-up light and simple, a fresh base and a couple of coats of mascara.
Dramatise in the evening by adding eyeliner or a strong red lip.
