From chomping caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, the Natural History Museum comes alive this summer with a tropical butterfly house and giant outdoor maze.
Shrink down into the undergrowth, enter an interactive maze as a caterpillar and find your way through a secret wild world as grass and leaves tower above your head. Choose the right route and emerge as a beautiful butterfly. But beware. The maze hides dead-ends, and down these lurk poisonous plants and predators waiting to pounce. With challenges around every twist and turn, collect stamps as you take on puzzles, fun games and exciting activities. For the brave, you can even take to the air and soar down the butterfly zip slide.
Along the way, you’ll discover fascinating facts about one of our planet’s most amazing life cycles.
Find out why some caterpillars disguise themselves as snakes, and why the monarch butterfly flies 4,800 kilometres across America every year.
If you survive the maze, you’ll emerge into the stunning butterfly house. Experience the beauty and magic of walking among hundreds of free-flying tropical butterflies and come face to face with a huge variety of these incredible creatures, marvelling at the diversity and behaviour of species from America, Africa and Asia.

It takes a truly remarkable fashion designer to forge so many ideals throughout a prolific career — that spanned more than 40 years — in one of the world's most competitive industries.
Impassioned by dreams of surrounding himself with beauty, Valentino created (through his talent) a world were the essence of a woman is celebrated to a degree that placed him on a pedestal that was rarely surpassed by any other designer.
Many fashion journalists (and enthusiasts), now view the 23rd of January 2008 (the day the Italian designer headed his last Haute Couture show in Paris), as an end of a defining era.
As though to enforce the significance of his departure — and as a tribute to his genius — Valentino received from Bertrand Delanoë, the Mayor of Paris, the Médaille de la Ville de Paris, the city’s honorary citizenship, the highest honour conferred by the French capital, the day after his final Haute Couture show in Paris. This is the latest institutional gesture that seals Valentino’s special relationship with Paris and France, after being awarded the country’s highest decoration, the Légion d’Honneur, in 2005.
His final Haute Couture Show has also signalled a retrospective exhibition starting on the 18th of June 2008, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of the Louvre.
Devoted to Valentino, the exhibition marks the first show based on an Italian couturier, in the history of the French museum.
Work too, has finally been completed on a fly-on-the-wall exploration called Valentino: The Last Emperor, produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer (Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine), which reveals the singular world of one of Italy's most famous men.
It remains to be seen whether anybody will be able to dress women with the degree of ethereal beauty, like Valentino did.

Five grand pianos, insides out, are suspended in the clearing of a forest ...
In an extraordinary sculptural installation that is both music box and landscape painting, Heiner Goebbels’ chief protagonists are all objects at the mercy of elemental forces. Stifter’s Dinge is a performance with no performers: an alchemy of sounds, visions, disembodied voices and unusual weather conditions.
International composer and director Heiner Goebbels’ compelling new work occupies one of London’s secret spaces: the cavernous interior of P3 — a former construction hall where concrete resistance was tested for the building of motorways.

White Cube Hoxton Square will show 'You Dig the Tunnel, I'll Hide the Soil', curated by the artist and writer Harland Miller in collaboration with Irene Bradbury. In anticipation of the bicentenary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth (1809), the exhibition explores the enduring legacy and cult status of the American writer.
Harland Miller discovered Poe as a child while recovering from a bungled appendix operation in York County Hospital, where he found an early-learner edition of Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Writings', which he remembers as having alleviated much of the misery of this time. Using crayons and a drawing pad he began writing and illustrating his own versions of these stories, and he has always cited Poe as his first literary influence. When Miller was writer in residence at the ICA, he began thinking about a project that would consider not only the abiding appeal of Poe but also some of the more diverse responses to his work. This exhibition is the result of that initial idea.
Poe is now recognised as an artist far ahead of his time, particularly for the charged psychological facets of his work, which seemed to foretell psychoanalysis, pre-dating Freud by more than half a century. His famous detective, Dupin, became the blueprint for many future detectives, including Sherlock Holmes, Poirot and Miss Marple, and he is also a pioneer of what we now know as science fiction, influencing such writers as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. However, Miller felt that Poe had become synonymous with whatever is merely gothic or dark, a misconception that he wanted to address by curating this exhibition. 'There's a real distinction here', says Miller. 'It was really telling when we'd approach people and they'd say, "Oh yeah, I've got this painting which is nearly all black!" That was really disappointing.' Miller sought to address this glib association by selecting a dozen of Poe's stories that seemed to lend themselves most to a more contemporary interpretation. Wherever he noticed a connection to an artist's existing work, life or practice, he approached them to read the stories and asked them to respond in any manner they saw fit and to interpret the story with a new work.
'Some of the ways in which I went about this were very tenuous,' Miller explains. 'It didn't always have to be about this great debt to Poe or some kind of extravagant mystery bound up in a cipher. With Damien Hirst, for instance, I did actually think he'd really love the story, but what really made me think of him was Poe's title 'The Startling Effects of Mesmerism on a Dying Man', which reminded me so much of the rhythm in one of Hirst's own titles, which I really love.'
This exhibition brings together a broad range of these responses, from 34 artists, ranging from painting and sculpture to installation, digital media and performance, as well as existing works such as Douglas Gordon's 'Sleeper (Portrait to Edgar Allan Poe' (2002) and Mike Nelson's installation 'Melnais Kakis' (The Black Cat) (1999).
'You Dig the Tunnel, I'll Hide the Soil' will feature the work of Fergus Bremner, Jake & Dinos Chapman, John Cooper Clarke, Liz Craft, Tracey Emin, Angus Fairhurst, Katharina Fritsch, Paul Fryer, Barnaby Furnas, Douglas Gordon, Rodney Graham, Marcus Harvey, Anton Henning, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Abigail Lane, Christian Marclay, Kris Martin, Harland Miller, Polly Morgan, Mike Nelson, Magnus Plessen, Michele Howarth Rashman, Julian Schnabel, Gregor Schneider, Norbert Schoerner, George Shaw, Cindy Sherman, Jason Shulman, Dirk Skreber, Paul Steinitz, Fred Tomaselli, Jane & Louise Wilson and Cerith Wyn Evans.
A fully illustrated exhibition guide with a short story by Harland Miller will be available.

This exhibition shows the work and collections of Thomas Hope (1769 - 1831), one of the most influential designers and patron of the arts in Britain during the early 19th century.
Hope played an important role in establishing the Regency style in England. His London townhouse in Duchess Street was described as the finest specimen of true taste in England or France. Wanting to improve British taste, Hope opened the house to the public and published a monograph in 1807 — Household Furniture and Decoration — which became the style bible par excellence.
The exhibition includes recreations of the flamboyant interiors of Hopes Duchess Street townhouse, as well as displays of sculpture, painting, furniture, metalwork and silver.
