From Atkins to the Zone, GI to cabbage soup, current trends in weight loss all seem to involve cutting something or other out of our daily diet. It can get confusing as one minute we’re told bread is bad and the next minute it’s meat that’s bad for you… little wonder we can get confused and fed up with the multitude of messages out there!
However, for some people elimination of foods is more than just part of the latest fad diet. It’s becoming increasingly popular for people to cut certain food types out of their diet because they ‘think’ they’re either allergic or intolerant to them. But how can we know for sure?
Allergic reactions occur when the body is exposed to a normally harmless substance, so a food allergy cannot occur the first time you eat a certain type of food.
However food intolerance is harder to diagnose and often occurs after you eat a substance that your body can't handle, you can usually find out the cause by cutting out the problem food then gradually reintroducing it to see if the symptoms return.
Even if it does turn out that you have intolerance to a certain food type there are plenty of delicious alternatives out there for you. For instance, people who suffer from lactose intolerance can find daily alternatives such as goat’s cheese. Made of goats milk, which has been proven to be healthy and lower in cholesterol than cow’s milk, most of restaurants you visit these days will have a roast vegetable and goats cheese tart on the menu as well as a goats cheese salad. But you don’t have to go to a restaurant to enjoy the alternatives – they’re there waiting for you in your local supermarket - what are you waiting for?!
