Fashion Trends 2006/7
There was a time, when fashion collections regurgitated (on the international catwalks) a definitive look that was the 'trend' for that season. Of course house signatures were stamped on the collection (to ensure loyal customers were catered for) but, somehow, the essence of the season's theme remained the same. On the high street, it was a brave buying department that followed the trend implicitly, as — they soon became wise to the fact, some themes could ruin them financially. Fast forward to A/W 2006 and it is altogether a different ball game. Sure the themes still do exist but, there are so many of them . . . Colours embark upon a spectrum odyssey that pays tribute to the evolution of dyeing techniques and fabric manufacturing. Gold, purple and grey come in a variety of shades that offer you options. If you were scared of looking too bold, or drab; the cuts, shapes and hues (on sale) can be layered into a plethora of wearable looks. You just have to look at the instore graphics and mannequins to see just how it all works . . . For the party season, gold, purple and ornate rich fabrics are the staple however, how bold you go remains up to you. Gold mini dresses can be transformed into tunics; tone down with leggings to produce a more modern, edgier look. But if, you require a statement dress, a full length version is the one for you . . . Suits come in two camps. The androgynous men's suit (available in the colours grey or black, wide leg or straight); or the ultra feminine, tulip/cocoon skirted kind, teamed with a delicately puffed-sleeve jacket . . . As for patterns, Tartan is back, in the traditional colours of: red or blue & green, either of which, always gives you just the right amount of colour injection without becoming overbearing . . . Leopard prints also make an appearance but, this season, the prints are less tacky. Condensed dots, on more muted backgrounds, yield a glamorous look and warmth, that is fitting for the season . . . Fur too has made a resurgence but if you still can't bear to wear it in its coat form (whether it is real or not) you can always opt for fur trims on: boots, jackets, capes and coats instead . . . Brilliant for bad hair days (and for unseasonally cold weather), are hats. Particularly, the woollen kind, that can easily be packed in your handbag just in case the weather changes . . . Carrying on from S/S 2006 are platform shoes that still come stacked high — elongating legs to their elegant best. Accompanying them this season, are versatile shoe boots, that manage to possess just the right amount of leather, to protect you from the elements without being a fully fledged boot. Perfect when teamed with city shorts or mini skirts . . .And there you have it, a brief synopsis of A/W 2006.
