Muji's long standing stance towards good design and functionality, is exemplary for its' A/W '08 collection, a tribute to the high street stores' non-fuss heritage, as well as the design team that includes a new recruit — who's identity remains anonymous. Speculation as to who this new recruit could be, has been inflamed by the company's decision to hold its collection preview at The Air Gallery on Dover Street, a short distance away from both Dover Street Market and John Rocha's store. Coincidental? Maybe, but the challenge to offer up something new and invigorating in a season that is punctuated with frilly party dresses and clergy colours (i.e. deep reds, emerald greens, purple) at other retailers; has stoked the innovation flames at the company's design headquarters.
The result: beautifully crafted shirts (that owe their looks to their organic cotton origins, carefully considered seems and buttons) — that are affordable classics; coats, who's warmth can be beefed up or cooled down (if required), by zipping in or out an insulating layer depending on the weather or mode of transport; or a stylised version, that features a funnel neck with asymmetric buttons that can be teamed with a plethora of cosy scarves and woolly hats, continue the brands understated style credentials.
Other design highlights in the collection include: a two tone fabric waistcoat (in the softest of cotton) and Muji's signature wool dress, which offers the wearer options in utilising the piece — for their own personal benefit.
Highly wearable, for both work and casual wear, the collections' multi-purpose, layering characteristics, yields a hassle free way of dressing (and deals with climate change) in a manner, that is both clever and — crucially — affordable.
All-and-all, perfect for winter and unmistakably Muji.
