BiBa Founder Barbara Hulanicki returns to Brighton

BiBa Founder Barbara Hulanicki returns to Brighton
Barbara Hulanicki
, founder of the iconic clothes store Biba, is returning to the city where she learned her craft, for a screening of a new documentary about her life.

Barbara, 72, studied illustration at what was Brighton College of Art, now part of the University of Brighton, in the early 1950s.

The documentary entitled Beyond Biba will be shown at the university’s Sallis Benney Theatre at the Grand Parade site at 6pm on the 29th of October and will be followed by a question-and-answers session with Barbara herself.

The film, produced by November Films, tells the story of the Warsaw-born fashion designer, including details on her early life, the time she enjoyed in Brighton and also how she started Biba with her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon — a business partnership that helped change Britain’s fashion in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the nineties, she arrived in Miami Beach where she designed interiors for Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones and Chris Blackwell’s Boutique Hotel Group. She is credited with the resurrection of Miami Beach’s crumbling Art Deco district.

As well as her interior design work, she has also delved back into the fashion world, designing for Coccinelle, Habitat, Graham and Brown and recently a clothing range for Topshop.

Digital maestro Matt O'Shea

Pictured above: Digital maestro Matt O'Shea
Creative graduate lends a helping hand
The thoughfulness and ingenuity of a recent University of Portsmouth graduate Matt O'Shea, is set to pay rewarding dividends.

Matt built the specialist website www.digital-creatives.com to showcase the best up-and-coming digital creative talent, in an effort to help graduates find work even though he had already won himself a digital media executive job.

He said: 'I was one of the lucky ones and got an internship within days of finishing my course and was then offered a fulltime job two months later, but I wanted to set the website up to help others who are still hunting for work.

'The creative industries are extremely difficult to get into, and I noticed that it was harder than it needed to be finding graduates and students who were producing creative content.

'The idea is to showcase the best in up-and-coming digital creative talent while also having input from top digital media creatives in the industry. Hopefully it will help them win the attention of the right people and get them job interviews.'

'All those featured on the site can be contacted direct by potential employers and the site is already being watched by some top industry professionals,' Matt said.

'It's a not-for-profit site and it's an attempt to give young creatives some exposure and help them become the next big thing.

'In a recession, creativity and originality prevail and so the more channels for identifying creative talent the better.'

Matt graduated with a 2:1 in Business Studies this summer. He asked a fellow former Portsmouth student Alex Crooks to design the website and it went live in August, just weeks after Matt graduated. They have since contacted the university to ask for fellow graduates and students to apply to the site to have their work showcased.

It will feature two students or recent graduates and one industry professional a week working in advertising, post-production, graphic design, animation and other creative industries.

Helen Fuge, of the University's Department Of Employability, said: 'We have offered to help Matt by providing student volunteers as his venture grows and develops should he need it. We help charitable, public and private sector businesses across the region so having the opportunity to help one of our own graduates in the early stages of their venture is of great interest and excitement.'

Young Designer of the Year
The search is on for the 2009 FDC Young Designer of the Year!
Calling all Fashion Designers and Craft makers (FDC).

Young Designer Awards is searching for young designers from the ages 9-25 years, who have the potential to be the next big stars of the international fashion stage.

FDC Young Designer Awards award was founded by London based Knitwear Designer, Joanna Marcella whose aim is to increase the number and visibility of young and exceptionally gifted multi-cultural designers, and to encourage them to reach their true potential and become as high profile as, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen or Vivienne Westwood.

Joanna says, “There are some extremely talented young people in our community, who deserve this opportunity. This year our designers will be given the theme of Homage to a Fashion Leader as part of their brief to produce an Avant-Garde outfit, we know they can rise to the challenge and produce the most flamboyant garments.”

As well as the Designer of the Year and the Avant-Garde Designer of the Year Awards, a very special International Designer Award will be presented by Christie Dinham CEO of International Designer Show to an extremely outstanding and talented designer.

Being selected for these awards is just the beginning, after the ceremony a support system that addresses all aspects of a developing career is set in motion. Winners have the opportunity to learn about the business, meet key people and advance their skills, as well as showcasing a debut collection in New York Fashion Week or Caribbean Fashion Week, to an audience of international fashion journalists, photographers and buyers.

Joanna continues: ”This is the only fashion design awards in the UK that has given young British Designers, who are still studying for their fashion degree, an opportunity to showcase in New York Fashion Week and Caribbean Fashion Week, this project is a unique and precious gem, we urge those who can, individuals and companies, to support us in anyway they can, to make the FDC Young Designer Awards a world wide project.”

TEXPRINT

LONDON 16-17 JULY & INDIGO
PARIS 15-18 SEPTEMBER

TEXPRINT: Spotting The TALENT OF THE FUTURE
LONDON: 16-17 JULY | INDIGO PARIS: 15-18 SEPTEMBER

Fashion's best kept secret, TEXPRINT, is about to showcase its latest installment, at Chelsea College of Art & Design from the 16-17 of July 2009.

Famed for being responsible for discovering some of the fashion industry's greats, (such as: Zandra Rhodes and Alice Temperley) the event promises to be more exciting than ever, with an impressive panel judging and selecting the six prize winners.

Prizes, this year, include:

BREAKING NEW GROUND prize | Sponsored by WGSN | Judged by Giles Deacon
COLOUR prize | Sponsored by Pantone Europe | Judged by Barbara Horspool of New Look.
INTERIOR FASHION prize | Sponsored by Sanderson Art in Industry Trust | Judged by Turner Prize winner, Grayson Perry.
KNIT prize | Sponsored by Lyle & Scott | Judged by its Head of Design John Tate.
PRINT prize | Sponsored by Liberty Art Fabrics | Judged by the first Texprint star, Zandra Rhodes.
WEAVE prize | Sponsored by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) | Judged by Ronald Weisbrod, Vice Chairman of the Swiss Textile Federation.

Fashion designers know that an original print, or unique embroidery, knitted or woven textiles give their designs an extra edge and in an increasingly competitive market place textile design has become even more relevant and is often the only ingredient that can bring a collection to life and differentiate it from its competitors.

TEXPRINT supporter Harold Tillman, Chairman of the British Fashion Council and Jaeger comments: "TEXPRINT is a wonderful opportunity for the industry to discover the stars of the future and, in these uncertain times, original textile design and creative thinking is what will make a business stand out from the crowd."

TEXPRINT was set up 37 years ago as an arm of the Design Council, to help British textile graduates start their careers.  Its ethos is to celebrate and mentor the best new graduating talent, bringing them together to network and present their work to some of the most important names in the industry both in the UK and abroad.  Twenty four outstanding young graduates are rigorously selected by panels of professional designers from more than 200 applicants, nominated as the best by their colleges from nearly 1500 graduating each year.

Today, the event is supported by an impressive host of companies, trusts and charities.  Major sponsors include Burberry, Jaeger, Marks & Spencer, Diane von Furstenberg, New Look and Como Unione Industriali, with additional support from Sir Paul Smith, Donna Karan, Nathan Jenden, Salvatore Ferragamo Italia SpA and Giles Deacon among many others.  Without them, the not-for-profit TEXPRINT would simply not happen.

Hayley Scanlan with Erin oSUPERMODEL eyes a fashion 'must have' by GRADUATE DESIGNER HAYLEY
University of Dundee graduate Hayley Scanlan has learnt that it takes more than luck to get noticed. The budding fashion textile designer's hard work and talent for striking designs (for her final degree project), caught the eye of fashion icon Erin O’Connor . . . /

Erin was in Dundee to officially open the Dundee Degree Show 2009 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design during last week. She watched a catwalk show put on by jewellery and textile design students — which she described as `brilliant and bonkers!’ — and immediately as it finished, she headed straight backstage to place an order with Hayley, for a stunning studded white leather jacket.

“I am a person like anyone else — I like to shop and I love fashion and when I saw that jacket I thought, 'I have to have that first!’' said Erin. “There was so much brilliant stuff in a great show from the students and I am delighted to have seen it all.”

Erin said she was now going to e-mail her measurements to designer Hayley for the tailor-made jacket.

Hayley (25), who lives in Roseberry Street in Dundee, was absolutely thrilled to get such a prestigious first order.

“I’m just absolutely blown away,” said Hayley. “Someone said to me right after the show finished that Erin wanted to try my jacket on, and I couldn’t believe it.

“But next thing she was trying it on and saying she definitely wanted one. Its absolutely fantastic.”

The white leather jacket, with black screenprinted drip panels and gold and silver studs, was modelled in the show by Hayley’s sister Holly (24).

Erin is one of the world's top models and is also chair of the British Fashion Council and a trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum. The University has been a driving force in the 'V&A Dundee — Making It Happen project which aims to establish a Victoria & Albert Museum presence in the city.

GRADUATE FASHION WEEK LAUNCHES THE PROTÉGÉ PROJECT
River Island, Mulberry, John Lewis, The Pentland Group, ASOS, Peacocks and British Elle Magazine will all be offering a graduate from one of the GFW 2009 courses, a short term contract to work on the Graduate Fashion Week’s Protégé Project, when they graduate this summer.

The idea of the initiative is to inspire small and medium sized creative businesses to tap into some of the outstanding talent produced by the UK"s Universities, keeping our graduates learning and starting them earning whilst they bring valuable new energy, creative thought and skills into the industry.

Terry Mansfield CBE, Chairman GFW said: "With the current economic climate and general feeling of social unease about the future of our workforces, it was vital that Graduate Fashion Week tackled the problems facing tomorrow's creative's head on, with a long term, tangible strategy.

I truly believe we have a duty to do everything we can to channel today's skills into real jobs ensuring that the world's best graduate talent is utilised in a way to benefit not only the graduate, but also the UK's creative economy. This short term contract would give a graduate the most invaluable work experience and gives them something really tangible when moving on to find a full time job.

I passionately believe that The Protégé Project is the way forward, and as more Hero companies come on board, the more optimistic we can be about the future of the creative industries."

Surrey's Leadership Academy develops scheme to help burgeoning businesses
In these unpredictable financial times, you have to take all the help you can get, in order to survive. Understanding the financial pressures vulnerable individuals and businesses now face, The University of Surrey has successfully secured finance (to the tune of £600,000) from the Higher Education Funding Council's new Economic Challenge Investment Fund (ECIF).

The aim of the £50m ECIF scheme is to help vulnerable individuals and businesses (particularly small and medium-sized enterprises and voluntary organisations) through the recession, by securing the skills they need to protect employment.

This includes development and training for those in work to enable them to continue in employment rather than be made redundant and training and development for those newly unemployed to improve their chances of re-employment.

The University's Leadership Academy for Innovation, Leadership and Recovery will seek to work with organisations at risk — specifically, to support SME owners and directors in developing new ways of innovating during difficult economic conditions. This will be achieved through an action learning approach which will help group members to address issues including liquidity and management of cash flow, customer retention, staffing levels and maintenance of core skills during the economic downturn. It will also seek to equip unemployed managers and executives with the personal skills and motivation necessary to get them back into work, and to help those at risk of redundancy to analyse and refocus their skills in order to sustain economic activity. This will be achieved through a coordinated programme of coaching, mentoring and action learning workshops. The Leadership Academy will work closely with the Regional Development Agency (SEEDA) and other key support agencies in the region to ensure this initiative is part of a coordinated framework of support for regional businesses — offering robust and innovative support during the downturn, and positioning the South East for economic recovery.

Leadership Academy Director, Professor David Gray commented: "We and our partners, the Open University Business School, Royal Holloway, the University of Greenwich and the Tavistock Institute, London are all delighted to be collaborating on this important new project. These are obviously very difficult times for many individuals and businesses. We intend to bring together leading academics from higher education, private providers of leadership development and those offering innovation advice to deliver world class leadership thinking and promote skills for innovation in business development. We cannot make the recession go away. However, we are confident that, through our collaborative initiatives, we can deliver practical help and advice to individuals and businesses that can fundamentally shift their strategy and recovery opportunities."

Fashion students Create designer looks — at credit crunch prices — for charity
The world of fashion can often seem superficial. Fortunately, students at The University of Portsmouth are part of a special project, collaborating with The Rowans Hospice charity shop in Southsea's Marmion Road, to raise money for a worthy cause.

The students choose clothes from the items donated to the shop and customise them to give them a unique designer look.

The re-designed clothes go back on sale in the shop and all the proceeds go to The Rowans Hospice, a local charity which provides specialist hospice care to enhance the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illness.

For the students, who will have a display area in the shop, it's a chance to obtain first hand experience of designing clothes to sell directly into the marketplace.

Mel Jones, 20, is studying for a BA Fashion & Textile Design with Enterprise. She said: "The focus on producing an individual look has reminded us about the reasons we came to study fashion in the first place — originality and creativity. And of course it's a fantastic opportunity to showcase our designs to the public.

"Kate Moss made vintage clothing fashionable. It's about creating an individual look. You won't see anyone else wearing the same thing."

The project was born out of an idea from staff at the Rowans Hospice. They contacted the University's Department of Employability which places students in projects and work placements to gain extra skills to make them more employable and maximise their chances of getting a job.

Volunteer Coordinator, Alice Hickman, said: "Employers increasingly expect graduates to have work experience and a wide range of skills to complement their academic qualifications. Our students graduate with much more than just a degree under their belts, they're ready to make a difference from day one."

Vanessa Gilding is the manager of the Rowans Hospice charity shops. She said: "Charity shops have always been a great place to pick up a bargain. With this project you can buy a custom-made designer garment for a fraction of the price whilst supporting your local hospice."

The Rowans Hospice shops are run by volunteers and rely entirely on charitable donations. The charity shops make a significant contribution towards the running costs of the Hospice.

The designer clothing range will be on sale from Friday 1 May and everyone involved is hoping that fashion-conscious women in the area will pop in to grab a bargain this weekend.

Currently the designer clothes are available in the Southsea branch only.

Last call for dress competition entries
If Friday the 24th of April 2009 isn't emblazoned in big letters in your diary, then you may loose the opportunity to enter into the annual University of Northampton Fashion Show Schools and Colleges Competition.

Now in its fourth year, the competition requires students to create a special occasion garment using up-cycled materials — a process currently employed by many contemporary fashion designers, looking at innovative ways to up-cycle and create innovative fashion statements which are developed through sustainable and ethical fabric and manufacturing sources.

Following the designers lead, participants need to submit four A3 illustration pages that demonstrate their design journey to their final concept. They will also need to manufacture one completed size 12 garment (or equivalent men’s outfit), by the deadline date. There will be three categories of entry — Years 10 - 11, Years 12 - 13, and FE Colleges (National Diploma and Foundation Course Students), with an outright winner in each category and a runner-up. Judging will take place on Wednesday the 6th of May 2009, by a panel of University Fashion staff and sponsors of the 2009 show.

PRIZES INCLUDE:
First prize for both categories will be an exciting afternoon VIP package to The University of Northampton’s annual Fashion Show which takes place on Wednesday the 17th of June 2009 at the prestigious Royal & Derngate in Northampton. The winners will have their outfits displayed at the event, take in lunch with VIPs, receive a bag of fashion goodies and have a trophy presented to them on the catwalk. Runners-up will also receive the VIP package to the afternoon Fashion Show and a Certificate of Achievement to add to their personal portfolio.

The winners of the 2008 University Fashion Show Schools Competition were: Elin Carmichael of Brooke Weston, Corby (Years 10 – 11) and James Burrows of Peterborough Regional College (Years 12 – 13) — who both designed pop star Lily Allen, a fuschia pink dress to be worn (hypothetically) at Glastonbury.

The University’s annual Fashion Show is one of the highlights of the academic year, attracting an audience of around 2,000 at an afternoon and evening show. This is the third year of Headline Sponsorship from internationally renowned haircare product services company, Schwarzkopf, in partnership with Hensmans, one of Northamptonshire’s premier hair salons.

The theme for the 2009 show will be Sustain, once more featuring top London models and a glamorous atmosphere. Fashion at The University of Northampton continues to grow its reputation, with graduates taking part in London Graduate Fashion Week and going on to work for top industry names.

All schools and colleges entering the competition will receive 10 free tickets for the afternoon Fashion Show (normal price: £2 each for students and their teachers).

Comolongmo Fair at Greenwich Market

COMOLONGMO FAIR To announce Rug Competition Winners
To commemorate Nepal's Kumbeshwar Technical School's 25th anniversary, the school ran a rug design competition, which students from Bow School and St Ursula’s Convent School (in London) entered.

The competition involved students submitting designs for rugs made to approximately 90cm x 183cms (3 x 6 ft) in size, and themed on the environment, abstract or free choice.

The designs submitted by all the participating school pupils, were collected together and the four of the best designs, are currently being weaved in Nepal into rugs. Once finished, they will be transported to London to be displayed at The Comolongmo Fair which runs from the 29th of October to the 2nd of November 2008. [See 'dates for your diary' for more information].

The students at Bow School said: ‘We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting project and are very much looking forward to not only taking part in the fair selling paper craft goods, but to developing our understanding of fair-trade and the traditional techniques used at the KTS school in Nepal.’

Ms Patricia Mullan, Assistant-Head of St Ursula’s Convent School said, “We felt very privileged to have a demonstration of Nepalese craft, by people who live and work in Nepal, meeting people always has a stronger impact than actually reading about them. To learn something of the culture of Nepal is interesting also and will, hopefully, broaden minds and encourage a curiosity about the country.”

The overall winner of the competition will be chosen by a ballot of visitors to the fair and there will be a prize awarded to the winner.

All the rugs displayed can be ordered and purchased by visitors to the fair.

Also at the fair, will be the announcement for the winner of the Paper Craft Competition. For more information about the Kumbeshwar Technical School project and Comolongmo Fair, visit the comolongmo website.
